10 Tips to a Better Cover Letter
By: Heather Cochrane
- Always address your cover letter to a specific person.
- Begin your letter with a persuasive opening. You want to capture the employer's attention and entice them to read your entire cover letter and resume. You should also indicate the position you are applying for including a reference number. Never plead to be considered for a position.
- When writing your cover letter think in terms of a conversation with the employer. Make sure your sentences flow smoothly and establish a relationship with the reader.
- Do your homework and show you know something about the company.
- Indicate how you meet the employer's needs and show how your previous accomplishments will be an asset to the employer. Don't try to impress or exaggerate your achievements.
- Write in the active voice and keep your sentences simple, direct and brief. Write in a positive and upbeat tone. Avoid negative words.
- Try to limit your paragraphs to no more than three sentences and limit your entire letter to less than one page.
- Write a separate cover letter for each position and tailor it to the specific needs of the employer.
- Thank the employer for his/her time and consideration.
- Proofread your letter, remove unnecessary words, check spelling and grammar and sign your cover letter.
