Résumé Writing

Introduction

When a hawk fixes on a target, it seldom misses. That's because it's designed just right for the purpose.

If you've set your eyes on the perfect job, you have to design your approach to fit that job. Your résumé is key and it should be right on target so you can capture an employer's attention.

Preparing your résumé is the first step toward finding the job that's right for you. Your résumé must include not only your qualifications, achievements, skills and experience, but also convey your ability to become an important asset for your prospective employer. Think of your résumé as a personal sales tool that you can use to convince employers to meet with you.

Employers must filter hundreds of résumés and will take only a moment or two to review yours. It's important that your résumé stands out from the crowd. Keep your résumé concise and present your information in an easy-to-read manner. Place your most significant achievements on the first page of your résumé.

You should modify your résumé to meet the specific expectations of each employer. You're much more likely to obtain an interview from an employer who can quickly identify how you can benefit his or her organization.

It's a good idea to keep your résumé up-to-date, so you'll be able to respond quickly to any opportunities that come along. Most positions are posted for only a few weeks so your ability to respond rapidly is vital to your success.

A note of caution: Be truthful in every statement on your résumé. Never lie or stretch the truth. Today, it's easy for employers to check the details on your résumé. If you choose to be untruthful, the misrepresentation may come back to haunt you. Don't make claims you can't support.

The following sections contain valuable tips to help you prepare a résumé that will land that all-important first interview.
