Résumé Writing

Getting Started

Before we begin, keep these general tips in mind:

  • It may seem obvious, but make sure your name appears on the top of each page of your résumé. Also include a page number at the top of the second page.
  • Do not place the date on your résumé.
  • Start your achievements and accomplishments with power verbs.
  • Do not use imprecise verbs such as "assisted" or "helped." They are too general and do not tell the employer exactly what you did.
  • Do not use expressions such as "responsible for" since these do not convey your specific accomplishments.

Generally, your résumé should not exceed two pages, although longer résumés are acceptable for highly technical jobs or top - level candidates.

Here are the elements you will need to include in your résumé:

  • Contact Information
    • Name
    • Current Address (if applicable)
    • Permanent Address
    • Telephone (home, office or both)
    • E-mail address
    • Web page (if applicable)
  • Career Objective
  • Summary of Qualifications (optional)
  • Work Experience
    • Date
    • Position
    • Employer
    • Relevant Achievements
    • Samples of Work (if relevant)
  • Education
    • Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates
    • Awards, Honours, Scholarships
  • Professional Development
  • Skills
    • Language Skills
    • Technical and Computer Skills
    • Other Relevant Skills
  • Volunteer Experience
    • Organization
    • Role
    • Achievements
    • Length of Involvement
  • Professional Affiliations
  • Interests

There is no one "right" résumé. Your goal is to create a sales document that clearly demonstrates your strengths and achievements and opens the door for a first interview.

Once you have prepared the first draft of your résumé, take a break, then come back and objectively review your content and writing. This time through, look for ways to fine tune your content and improve your writing.
