Networking

Where to start

Here are some suggestions to find people in your field:

  • Start with your present network
  • Join related professional associations
  • Network at events
  • Join dedicated networking organizations
  • Cold call professionals in your field

Your Present Network
Your current network consists of your friends, relatives, teachers, instructors, business associates etc. You should start with this network since you are already comfortable with these people. You may feel overwhelmed that you do not know anyone working in a field you would like to join, but chances are someone in your network will. You'll be surprised how many people we all know.

Join Related Professional Associations
Many occupations are represented by one or more associations. These are excellent resources for professional development courses, conferences and a great place to network.

You can find an association in your field by searching the Internet.

Event Networking
Events can provide a great place to meet people in your field of interest. Typical events include:

  • Conferences
  • Trade shows
  • Professional development events
  • Professional association meetings
  • Networking specific events

Dedicated Networking Organizations
You should also consider joining professional networking organizations. Some organizations dedicated to help with your networking include:

Cold Calls
You should also try cold calling professionals in your field of interest. While this can be intimidating it can often lead to making successful contacts with people who can help you.
