Prepare for your Interview

Researching the Employer
You should try to find out as much as possible about the potential employer before your interview.

Finding information about a public company is usually quite easy. You can obtain information from the Internet, annual reports, trade journals, periodicals and newspaper articles. Information can also be obtained by speaking with personnel in the communications department. Be sure to tap into your personal network as well. Your network might be able to put you in contact with other employees.

From your research you should have answers for the following questions

  • Who owns the company?
  • How old is the company?
  • Where are the corporate subsidiaries located?
  • Who are the key managers of the company?
  • How many employees are there?
  • What are the company's primary markets and customers?
  • What are the products or services?
  • What type of people does the company hire?
  • Does the company have a leadership position in the market?
  • What are the revenues and earnings?
  • Is the company growing or downsizing?

Researching the Position
This task can be somewhat more challenging. If you know someone who works at the company, try to find out key information such as why this position has become available, the history of the position and the general culture and working conditions in the company.

You may also contact the employer or administrative assistants directly with specific questions regarding the requirements of the position.

Identifying your Strengths
Take time to be introspective and identify your strengths. Remember you only have a few minutes to convey why you are an ideal candidate for the position. You have a lifetime of experiences to draw upon. Focus on the types of things you like doing and do well that are relevant to the position you are seeking.

You should also consider the following:

  • Is this position consistent with your career goals?
  • Examples of past work which would demonstrate your ability to perform well in this position.
  • The strengths you can bring to this position.
  • Would you be comfortable working in this corporate environment and culture?
